On a chilly but sunny day in July I visited Mt Burr Primary.

It was my first visit to a small school. They also have a preschool onsite. The school has around 40 students.

I worked with preschoolers to year 2 and years 3 to 6. In these sessions I read Even George followed by lots of discussion on character development in a picture book. The unique opportunity for readers to hear and see how I worked with illustrator Vaughan Duck and how we made the characters come to life.

The students from years 3 to 6 are working on a writing project that all schools in area are involved in. The topic is ‘ community ‘. Mt Burr students are also learning how to give and receive feedback. 

The students have chosen a range of genre for their project and  I was able to work with each student independently or in small groups. All students will have their books printed.

In these discussions we talked about audience – who are they writing for, how structure changes across a range of genre and feedback.

It was a pleasure to meet such motivated students and have an opportunity to speak with the staff as well.
