About the Author

Carolyn says she was born to tell stories with children. She’s not the one found in the kitchen at parties she’s the one playing on the floor with the children.

Here’s her story

Carolyn has spent 45 years working in education as a teacher and as an English Curriculum Officer. She taught children at all levels of schooling. She loved teaching five year olds the most. As a Curriculum Officer she managed and wrote early childhood and primary level resources including books, an ABC TV series and web based materials.

In the early 2000s Carolyn went back to University to study writing and editing and majored in Writing for Children. For the next few years she worked as an editor and proof reader. She edited numerous novels and helped authors self-publish a well written, well researched and well presented book.

In Carolyn’s next role she established a busy and successful educational consulting business tutoring children with very diverse learning needs. She worked with students in her home classroom, online and face to face in children’s schools and homes. She also worked with students from SPELD (Specific Learning Difficulties Association of SA) and the Ronald McDonald Learning Program. Working in different contexts and with students one on one Carolyn developed a deep understanding of the issues children faced if they could not reach age related learning expectations. As part of this work she regularly conducted professional learning workshops for teachers needing support for neuro-diverse students.

With this rich background of career highlights Carolyn’s expertise and subsequent passion became helping students who didn’t quite fit in! She began co-writing stories with the children she tutored so they didn’t feel so alone.

Carolyn’s most recent achievement has been the publication of her beautiful picture book Even George. She now does readings and follow-up activities with children from kindergarten age to year 3. Carolyn is available for workshops in schools and libraries in Metropolitan Adelaide.

She is an active member of a number of writing groups: (ASA) The Australian Society of Authors, (SCBWI) Society of Children’s Book Writers and Illustrators, Writers SA and (CBCA) The Children’s Book Council of Australia (SA branch).

Carolyn is part of the national Author Penpal program. She regularly writes and receives letters from the upper primary students in a NSW primary school.

In her spare time Carolyn loves travelling, she has visited over 30 countries and every state of Australia. She speaks Spanish, a little and slowly!

She has seven grandchildren who she adores and Even George is her gift to them.

Even George

About the story

Even George is based on real life. In her first year of teaching Carolyn did encounter a very reluctant learner, until the random gift of a bag of soccer balls revealed a totally different and engaged child. The lesson she realised was that all children want to learn. It’s finding the key to engage every learner that’s important.
In every class there can be reluctant or withdrawn students like ‘George’.
Students who are perhaps on the autism spectrum, have a learning disability or a number of other possibilities.

A caring and attentive adult can open the door with and for these students.

Amazing random fact 1:

While visiting an open range Zoo in Indonesia a baby orangutan jumped from his keeper into Carolyn’s arms and proceeded to kiss her passionately!

Amazing random fact 2:

My first job was putting the stuffing into Humphrey Bear toys. Do you have a Humphrey Bear toy in your house?
